Never really got this one out the way I wanted it – I wanted to keep it dry, but it’s so heavy on the verbiage that I’m not sure any sense of irony comes through. It was meant to be satire, not celebration – though there are certainly aspects of the wordless-grunt-male-gathering that can be appealing – but the fact that it’s got such logorrhea kinda confuses the issue. Surely any Real Man would tell this guy to shut up! The rhythms are fun to sing, though I’m not sure it’s even comprehensible (much less parsible) without the lyrics – it’s like homework to listen to. Apart from that, it’s my favourite!!!!1!
There’s a point in ev’ry party I’ve attended
where the people reassemble on the basis of their gender
Though I never see it happening
I’m suddenly aware of this unbreachable divide
For a minute we were talking to the women on the patio
and getting into matters frank and tender
Looking up I see the men have gravitated
to a circle near the radio outside
where we know not to stray from the news of the day
to discussing the way that men and women relate
where the air is replete with the crackle of meat
and debate on the heat of the barbecue plate
we always return to the gas and the grill
our fingers may burn but our ears never will
a bloke can partake and let the night stand still
with nothing at stake but the gas and the grill
yes, and it’s best for the Australian male
we love the low disclosure
yes, on request we go beyond the pale
but we forego exposure
yes, it’s working out well
we don’t want to ask, we don’t want to tell…
Here the ladies of the harem in the living-room
are fashioning a catalogue of intimate emotions
Happy knocking a scenario together
out of secret needs and sexual demands
Now I’m not the kind of man to say there isn’t any profit
in the effort to appreciate such notions
But there’s got to be a lot of any body
that no other body ever understands
so if you want to get deep, hit the couches and weep
you can fall in a heap of existential despair
if it all sounds too hard, you should try the backyard
we don’t let down our guard and get emotional there
we always return to the gas and the grill
our shoulders may burn but our souls never will
and out on the lawn, you got to know the drill:
don’t come the raw prawn at the gas and the grill
yes, and it’s best for the Australian male
we love the low disclosure
yes, on request we go beyond the pale
but we forego exposure
yes, it works out okay
we don’t want to hear, we don’t want to say
at the gas and the grill
