The opening song proper to the Christmas show “The Terminativity”, in which we meet our young plucky protagonists before the intervention of an unstoppable killing machine from the future. Originally performed by Steven Gates and Aurora Kurth with the requisite rock belt – far more convincingly essayed than my own efforts on this demo, but you get the idea. And yes, the piano playing is rudimentary (and even then it’s half-programmed), but we can’t all be Roy Bittan now can we?
Joey & MaryEarly ev’ry mornin’ – Mary’s still asleep –
I slip out of our tiny home in shadows blue and deep.
I head down to the worksite
I sign on for the day,
and I try to build the future for my girl.
Now the sun is burnin’ and the wind is full of sand
I swear I spent the winter with a hammer in my hand
But the boss man calls for overtime,
and the rent is overdue,
so I steel my soul and soldier on,
when all I wanna do is shout out:
“C’mon, Mary, let’s go down the lake tonight!
“Just wrap your legs around this ass and hold on tight!
“We’ll ride down to the shore, ‘cos I’ve never wanted more
“than to hold your hand, and share some wine,
“nothing could be more divine,
“Oh, c’mon, Mary, don’t be scared, my word is good!
“I still respect the honour of your maidenhood.
“Your kiss is all I need to keep me satisfied,
“the blessing of my angel bride.”
I’m still in love with Joey –
so strong and brave and kind –
But there ain’t no force can change his course
when he makes up his mind.
So he works his bread and butter,
but he spreads himself too thin
’til we never see each other anymore.
When you hook up with a tradie,
you expect a bumpy ride,
but he treats me like a lady,
and my virtue stays untried.
So we cling to Jacob’s ladder,
but there’s always more to climb
in a life so dull and sensible,
I still recall a time when he’d say:
“C’mon, Mary, let’s go down the lake tonight!
“Just wrap your legs around this ass and hold on tight!
“We’ll ride down to the shore, ‘cos I’ve never wanted more
“than to hold your hand, and share some wine,
“nothing could be more divine,
“Oh, c’mon, Mary, don’t be scared, my word is good!
“I still respect the honour of your maidenhood.
“Your kiss is all I need to keep me satisfied,
“the blessing of my angel bride,
“you’ll always be my angel bride!”
