Churlish

Part of Northcote Country Soul.

Churlish

My mother’s heart was big and strong
my father’s heart was true
my sisters were delightful in the childhood that I knew
and I never had to go without
or sleep out in the rain
So I think it would be churlish to complain.

I’ve picked up friends from here and there
I’d say that we were close
They’re infinitely loyal and appreciably verbose
and we’ll stay in of an evening
with 500 and champagne
So I think it would be churlish to complain.

Misery is barely plausible
when you’re white and straight and middle-class and male
I’m hardly gonna gnash my teeth and wail all night and day
I’ve never been in love, but that’s the worst that I can say
so let’s not get carried away.

Sure, I’ve never felt the kind of love
that sweeps you off your feet
I have no doubt from what I hear the feeling must be sweet
But then I’ve never had to deal
with broken hearts and all that pain
and so I think it would be churlish to complain.
In light of everything, it’s positively foolish to complain.
